Examples of Exponential Growth

One example of exponential growth is so terrible all I can do is report the mathematics and try not to think about it. The total count of Americans dead of COVID-19 increased by one order of magnitude (factor of 10), from 87 on March 16th, to over 870 today (it's 841 at 1:30pm EST, it'll be well over 900 by nightfall). Exponential growth means that if the "curve flattening" doesn't start in the next nine days, then another order of magnitude, to about 9,000, will be reached in the next nine days, by late on April 3rd. By which time, the death rate would be 2000 per day. In Italy, the curve bent before those kind of numbers were reached. Here's another example of exponential growth: worldwide, the total COVID-19 deaths have just hit 20,000 an hour ago. One-eighth of them died yesterday.

Here's a nicer example of exponential growth. This is a plot in the Rose Garden on March 21st:

And here is the identical one next to it, just three days later - mid-day yesterday, March 24th. Man, that's serious growth. I feel like I could picnic out there and watch them grow before my eyes.

And for a more whimsical example of growth, a few weeks ago I had a picture of anice little turtle sunning himself on a log a few metres from the west short of Lost Lagoon. The other day, it had multiplied to three turtles:

We continue to be frustrated at getting pictures of Felix: he only comes out at night when we watch TV, and climbs all over us, but the lighting is low and I hate to use a flash on cats, it gives them those "laser beam eyes" that look so weird.
