June 2: Bokeh Bumbling

Alan has challenged me to learn to do the "bokeh" technique for pictures. It's where the subject is the only thing that is not blurred. With a manual camera, you could open up the lens as wide as possible, making for shallow depth of field. On an automatic camera, you have to basically game the computer running it, with shots at the extreme of the telephoto. So I stood a socially-distant 3 metres or so from these flowers and animals, with the telephoto taking me to inches. Most of them were terrible. These are a few of the survivors.

Animal photography is a natural for bokeh since you can't get within 3 metres to start with. I liked this one, the raven seems deep in thought.

But I had fail after fail, as the bird was blurred or the background was not. But then, I was also looking all around with my telephoto already at max, and I got a couple of shots like this one because of it. The day was a win.
